Prayers of the People: Ascension

Jesus, friend and savior
today we remember your ascension
not as the moment that you left us
but as the moment you promised to be with us forever
through the Holy Spirit, our guide and companion.

We remember how the first act of your friends
after you went up
was to gather to pray
to recall how they could talk to you about anything
always.

And so we too gather to pray
grateful that you hear us.

We pray for creation,
for the earth and all that is in it
for the life we are called to care for
for the joys of nature
and the struggles of balancing consumption with preservation.

We pray for the nations
for people in every place,
of every culture and creed.
We pray that division and warfare may cease
that we might remember that you are the only ruler worth bowing down to
that leaders might work in cooperation to seek the good of all.
We pray for those who have no country
forced to run from war, poverty, or persecution.
We pray that they might find refuge and peace.

We pray for our country,
for all who seek to make it strong
to make it a place where all are treated equally
and may pursue life, liberty, and happiness.
We pray that coast-to-coast we might seek solutions
instead of stirring up prejudices
or losing ourselves to power struggles.
We pray that you would shed your blessings on our country
your blessings of peace, kindness, courage, and love.

We pray for our church
Crescent Springs Presbyterian
that we would be faithful in all things
open to the workings of the spirit
and constant in our service.
We pray that as members here
we would know how much we are loved and valued,
know that we are your children
and your partners in the work of your kingdom.

We pray for ourselves, our friends and families, all we know best
that your blessings would be shown in our lives
and your gracious touch would be upon those we know who hurt
that we would see you clearly in the faces of those we love
and in our own hearts.

We pray especially this day for…

[prayers of the congregation may be spoken here]

We lift these prayers to you, asking, where possible, to work by your side for what we have asked. May these prayers shape our lives, and guide our actions. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray, saying Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
